Hooky’s English pubs
The English pub is part of our way of life. For hundreds of years the public house has been at the centre of communities in Oxfordshire and throughout the country. The public house is a place where people go to socialise, drink beer, eat food, relax and enjoy themselves. There are no better examples of English pubs than those found in and around Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.
Old pubs to gastro pubs
Hook Norton owns some of the finest uk pubs, from traditional old pubs like the Reindeer in Banbury with its English civil war connections to high quality pub restaurants. We are lucky enough to boast a few “gastro pubs" in our estate. The Angel, close to the centre of Burford, is one of the most popular and well known in Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds. This English pub is a fine example of a 16th Century coaching inn and one of the best pub restaurants you can find. It is an award-winning brasserie with two AA Rosettes.
When you have finished eating at one of the finest restaurants in the Cotswolds the Angel can also provide comfortable and stylish pub accommodation consisting of three deluxe en-suite rooms in keeping with its coaching inn heritage.
Pub accommodation
Several of the most beautiful villages in the Cotswolds boast a Hook Norton public house and quite often a pub that is steeped in local history. Wonderful welcoming old pubs with old oak beams and flickering log fires in the winter months.
These Oxfordshire and Warwickshire villages are situated in some of the most picturesque countryside in England. They offer visitors who prefer a more relaxed environment a warm welcome and pub accommodation with bed & breakfast and fine Hook Norton ales. All situated in convenient locations ideal for exploring the many interesting and unique places in the Cotswolds.
Hook Norton pubs are committed to supporting their local communities and often buy their supplies from local butchers, bakers and greengrocers. However, the Hook Norton pub family is much wider than our own pubs; throughout the area many great classic English pubs sell our beers. So if you find yourself eating a meal in a pub restaurant , don’t be surprised to find Hook Norton beers provided for your enjoyment.
Hook Norton also boasts a few public houses that feature prominently in events connected with the English civil war. The Reindeer in Banbury, the Royal Oak and the Roebuck. One of the most interesting is the “Castle Inn” Banbury built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Edgehill and now marks the spot where King Charles I raised his standard on the day of the battle.
Early links with the pub trade
Links with pub trade started for Hook Norton Brewery when in 1849 the founder of the brewery John Harris moved from his fathers’ farm in Chilson into the village of Hook Norton.
He purchased a moderate sized holding that included a malthouse. The previous owner had started supplying farmers who brewed at home as well as a pub or two. Switching from farming into malliting was followed in 1856 by his first step into commercial brewing.
So if you’re planning a visit to the Cotswolds and are looking for a traditional English pub, gastro pubs or Pub accommodation you have found the right place. Visit our pubs page and see what a Hooky public house has to offer you.
