Modern ale and lager fonts vie for space on the bar of this smart, sassy town pub. The Cap n Gown is a smashing local – where most of the customers are known by name – and style is spelt with a capital S.
You can see this one room pubs character changes through the day – early-on passersby pop in for a pint and to read the newspapers, while in the evening the conversation and laughter bounces around the smart, toffee cream and Spanish brown coloured walls. For most of the day the pub is lit by natural light falling through the clear glass windows, enhancing the welcoming, natural feel of the pub. Within easy reach of Worcester Foregate Street Station, the Cap n Gown is a haunt of many sports lovers, with rugby, football and horse racing all close by.
Sport features on the flat screen TV - and customers say because of the banter and camaraderie, the Cap n Gown is the best pub in Worcester to watch the big rugby and football games. The pub has no kitchen, but customers are able to buy food from the deli next door and bring it in to eat.
The pub is the sponsor of Pershore Rugby Club. Licensees Luke Charles-Short and Rachel East are local to Worcester and at 25 and 23 are the youngest couple to run a Hook Norton pub. Both have worked for many years in the pub trade and they jumped at the chance to be the tenants of the Hook Norton Brewery pub.
Luke said: “Our customers love what we have done to the Cap n Gown. And CAMRA members who come in say the Hooky beer is fantastic. The Cap n Gown is for people of all ages - we get a nice crowd of people in here. We want it to be the best and friendliest pub in Worcester.” We have series of acoustic music evenings are planned.
