The New Inn, Abthorpe, Northamptonshire is a proper village pub, at the centre of community life. It is a quintessentially English village pub built of local stone complete with an inglenook fireplace – where people can arrive as strangers and leave as friends. Three generations of the Smith family including - Rob, Barbara and their daughters Sam and Jo are working hard making sure their country pub thrives.
The family’s ambition is to source as much as possible from local suppliers. The ale comes from the Hook Norton Brewery. Local vegetables, all grown within four miles of the village take preference in the kitchen and the lamb, beef and pork is likely to come from the Smith’s farm across the Tove valley in Slapton.
The wholesome menu includes beer battered cod with mushy peas and chips and Cumberland sausage and mash. The outside and interior of the pub has been repainted, so that it is now clean, light and airy and the garden has been given a new lease of life. “Abthorpe is a wonderful village and this is a friendly local,” said licensee Barbara Smith. “We just want people to come here and enjoy themselves.”
The pub doesn’t have any letting rooms but the Smith family’s nearby farmhouse - Slapton Manor Farm, Slapton, Towcester NN12 8PF - offers bed and breakfast. A period stone cart-horse stable and hay loft conversion featuring exposed timbers has been converted into several en suite rooms creating a warm, relaxing atmosphere with individual entrance.
Pub and bed and breakfast are only three miles from Silverstone Circuit, within easy reach of the Cotswolds, Althorp House, Stowe Gardens, Canons Ashby, Sulgrave Manor and the M1, M40, A43, Towcester, Northampton, Brackley, Banbury and Milton Keynes.
