About the Wellington Inn Morton-in-Marsh
The Wellington Inn is not far from the centre of the ancient market town of Moreton in Marsh.
The small, friendly and pretty town, at the head of the beautiful Evenlode valley, dates back 1,000 years to the Saxon era.
The town has a wide range of facilities including some fabulous shops and The Wellington air museum. The Wellington or the Welly as it is often known locally - is a fabulously friendly pub.
Many years ago it was known as The Duke of Wellington, but its name changed over 50 years ago, when it was frequented by members of the Royal Air Force from a nearby airbase who flew Wellington bombers. Today, the airbase has gone, but the pub’s name is still The Wellington, and the sign outside is a tribute to its close links with the aeroplane. The Wellington, however, still has very close links with the site of the airbase. The airbase is now a college for fire fighters from all over the world.
Thursday nights in the pub have become renowned for hosting a session for students from the college - who come to talk, eat and enjoy a drink of the locally produced Hook Norton beer.
A conservatory is available for families to enjoy a meal or just a comfortable drink, it is also available to hire. Outside, the regional game Aunt Sally is played in the summertime. Not much is known about the history of the building - it was built as a hotel in 1856 but was burnt down and rebuilt in 1905.
